Thunder Rock Now Targeting Aintree

Olly Murphy is inclining towards assessing Thunder Rock's capabilities in the Aintree Bowl following his resurgence in Kelso's Premier Chase.

The eight-year-old's triumph in the Scottish Borders marked his second victory at Listed level this season. Should he participate at Aintree in April, it would be his inaugural appearance in a Grade One competition since his sixth-place finish in last year's Brown Advisory Novices' Chase.

Expressing his sentiments, Murphy believes Aintree serves as the ideal setting to determine Thunder Rock's potential at the highest echelon of competition. The gelding will now undergo a period of rejuvenation in preparation for the £250,000 event.

Reflecting on Thunder Rock's performance, Murphy stated,

"He displayed an impressive showing and demonstrated a comprehensive performance on Saturday. His jumping was precise, he travelled smoothly, and displayed a strong finishing kick."

While awaiting the handicapper's assessment, Murphy anticipates aiming for Aintree's Grade One event, favouring the flat track and favourable ground conditions. Thunder Rock thrives in small fields, making this target an appealing prospect.

"We will rejuvenate him in readiness for the challenge. The uncertainty remains whether he possesses the necessary qualities. Nevertheless, taking calculated risks is sometimes crucial. With Thunder Rock entering the fray fresh, having bypassed Cheltenham, our performance at Aintree will be a litmus test,"

Murphy concluded.
