The Strikin Viking returns to York for the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, aiming for a second win at the track following his impressive debut. Named after Erling Haaland, the son of Inns Of Court hopes to find success in group company after two solid but unsuccessful attempts at this level.
Despite being narrowly beaten by Henri Matisse in Ireland and Black Forza at Goodwood, connections are confident about his chances. Richard Brown from Wathnan Racing believes the fast six furlongs at York will suit The Strikin Viking’s style, although he faces strong competition from Big Mojo and Shadow Of Light.
Big Mojo, who won the Molecomb Stakes, has shown notable improvement and is expected to handle the six furlongs well. Trainer Mick Appleby is optimistic about his chances.
Caburn, unbeaten in two starts, including the Super Sprint at Newbury, is also a contender. Trainer Jack Jones is pleased with his form and feels the extra distance will benefit him, though a bit of rain would be ideal.
Shadow Of Light, another strong contender, aims to stay unbeaten and give Charlie Appleby a second Gimcrack win in three years.
Karl Burke’s Andesite, who won over this course and distance in May, and Aidan O’Brien’s Camille Pissarro, who performed well in the Anglesey Stakes, also entered the race. Eve Johnson Houghton’s Billboard Star and Andrew Balding’s Cool Hand Luke, who has placed well in recent stakes, are expected to compete strongly, alongside Kevin Ryan’s King’s Call and Adrian Keatley’s Symbol Of Strength.
