Today's meeting at Newton Abbot, which was set to include the Well Done England Euro Champions 2024 Handicap Chase, has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track.
The racecourse in South Devon was supposed to host a seven-race National Hunt card, with Matt Bailey, owner of the Par Inn in Cornwall, sponsoring the two-mile-five-furlong handicap chase in support of England's Euro 2024 campaign. Despite England's advancement to the semi-finals, they ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat against Spain in the final.
Bailey had hoped that naming the race after the national team would bring some positive energy, saying, “If it comes in then I’m a genius and if it doesn’t, it’s something we can all laugh about.”
Unfortunately, heavy rainfall following a yellow weather warning resulted in a waterlogged track and unsafe conditions at the winning line, leading to the unavoidable decision to cancel the race and the entire meeting.
