The Lion In Winter outshines Ruling Court

The Lion In Winter emerged victorious in a thrilling Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York, outshining Ruling Court.

Both horses, highly anticipated for next year's Classics after impressive debut performances, clashed for the first time at Knavesmire. Charlie Appleby’s Justify colt was the star attraction following a dazzling display at Sandown, while Ryan Moore's mount, The Lion In Winter, led from the start alongside Hugo Palmer’s The Waco Kid.

As the race entered its final quarter mile, Buick asked the even-money favourite, Ruling Court, to challenge, but Aidan O’Brien’s Sea The Stars colt proved too strong, pulling away to win by a length and three-quarters at 2-1. Ruling Court eventually finished behind Wimbledon Hawkeye, who claimed second at 22-1.

Following the win, The Lion In Winter was priced at 8-1 for the 2000 Guineas and 6-1 for the Derby by Paddy Power.

O’Brien commented: “He won very well last time, and people had high expectations for him. Wayne Lordan loved him, and he’s always been a straightforward, uncomplicated horse. We wanted to give him experience before the Goffs Million, and he handled the quick seven furlongs well. Ryan didn’t even need to use the stick, and he broke the track record, showing he’s a very smart colt. I’m thrilled with him. We had planned for the Goffs Million and Henri Matisse for the Futurity, but the team will make the final decision.”

James Owen, trainer of Wimbledon Hawkeye, suggested his colt would benefit from a longer distance. “He ran a great race and will definitely step up to a mile next. I see him as a mile-and-a-quarter horse. We’ll see how things go and make decisions with the owners.”
