The Jukebox Man Targets Christmas Racing

Trainer Ben Pauling is weighing up festive-season options for The Jukebox Man, following his commanding victory on his chasing debut in the Grade Two John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury.

Owned by Harry Redknapp, the six-year-old, who has placed in three Grade One hurdle contests, including a narrow defeat in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham, made a seamless transition to fences. Under Ben Jones, he delivered a bold front-running performance to claim a decisive win against a strong field.

Pauling expressed delight with the performance:

“He came out of it really well, there’s not a mark on him. I was certain he would need the run, but he handled it brilliantly and won nicely. We’re thrilled with him.”

While The Jukebox Man has shown his stamina over three miles in hurdles, his recent Newbury success over two and a half miles has prompted Pauling to consider shorter trips.

“The Kauto Star at Kempton over three miles on Boxing Day is an option, but so is the Noel at Ascot (December 20) over two miles and two furlongs,” Pauling said. “He shows speed on the track that he doesn’t at home, so we’re keeping an open mind.”

Despite a slight tendency to lug left, Pauling is confident it will not limit the horse’s race options:

“He’s gun-barrel straight when you straighten him up, so I don’t think he has to go left-handed. His Newbury run was on ground quicker than he’s used to, and he looked better than ever. We’ll weigh up the options and decide.”

The Jukebox Man’s adaptability and raw ability have him primed for a strong campaign, with his next step eagerly anticipated.
