The Ground Conditions Could Delay The Race at Exeter

Trainer Harry Fry is eagerly anticipating Gidleigh Park’s switch to fences this season, though ground conditions might postpone the six-year-old’s chasing debut scheduled for Monday at Exeter. Owned by the Eyre family, Gidleigh Park created excitement with a dominant start to his career, winning his first four races decisively. Though initially slated for the Brigadier Rayner Beginners’ Chase, Fry has indicated the chase debut may be postponed due to insufficient rain.

“He’s a horse we have high hopes for over fences and are eager to see in action, but it’s looking unlikely for Monday given the dry conditions,” Fry shared. “The forecast suggests rain may be coming soon, so we’re hoping it’s not too long before he can run.”

Fry reflected on Gidleigh Park’s sixth-place finish in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, where testing ground and distance may have limited his performance. Fry intends to bring the horse back to a shorter distance, allowing his natural strengths as a big, galloping jumper to shine.

Gidleigh Park isn’t the only promising talent in Fry’s stable. Anno Power, a novice hurdler, recently made a winning debut at Sandown, displaying resilience to fill the void left by retired Cheltenham Festival winner Love Envoi in the mares’ category.

“Credit to Anno Power—most horses wouldn’t have fought back the way she did at the last,” said Fry. “There’s room for improvement, but she’s come out of the race well, and we’re excited to watch her progress this season.”
