Gavin Sheehan is set to partner Hewick in Saturday's Betfair Chase at Haydock, stepping in for regular jockey Jordan Gainford. Sheehan previously guided Shark Hanlon's star to victory in the King George VI Chase last year.
Hewick comes into the race after a strong performance in the Champion Chase at Down Royal, where he led for much of the contest before being overtaken by Envoi Allen. Hanlon has hinted at a potential defence of the King George VI title during the festive period but revealed a revised plan due to his upcoming suspension. The horse is now set to head to the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March following the Haydock run.
The trainer expressed concerns over the weather, as over 20 millimetres of rain are forecast for Haydock, which could soften the ground.
"We’ve got Gavin, and we’re hoping the rain stays away, but he’s running regardless," said Hanlon. "He can handle cut in the ground, but the fences look bigger to him on soft going. Ideally, it’ll stay good for Saturday."
Hanlon noted Hewick’s versatility but emphasised the horse’s preference for firmer footing:
"He handles soft ground — he nearly won in France on very soft going—but he’s simply better on good ground. He gave everything at Down Royal and didn’t deserve to lose. I think he’s even better this year than last."
The outcome of the Betfair Chase will shape Hewick’s road to Cheltenham, as connections balance ambitions with weather-related uncertainties.
