Protektorat Triumphs for Skeltons in Ryanair Challenge

Protektorat demonstrated his versatility by excelling over a shorter distance to secure victory in the Ryanair Chase at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival for the highly successful Dan Skelton team.

Having previously competed in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and finishing third and fifth in the past two years, Protektorat's connections opted to return to one of the key races on the third day of the festival. The race saw a strong pace set by Stage Star and Ahoy Senor, with Protektorat positioned closely behind under the guidance of jockey Harry Skelton.

As the race unfolded, the focus appeared to be on the favourite and defending champion, Envoi Allen. However, neither Stage Star nor Protektorat were willing to concede defeat easily. Despite Stage Star fading after the final two fences, Protektorat showcased his staying power and determination.

Approaching the last fence, there was little to separate Protektorat from Henry de Bromhead's charge. Ultimately, it was Protektorat's stamina that shone through as he surged up the Cheltenham hill to clinch victory at odds of 17-2.

This triumph marked Skelton's fourth win at the Festival, and within a short span of 40 minutes, owners including Sir Alex Ferguson and John Hales celebrated their second victory. Skelton expressed satisfaction with the strategy adjustment for Protektorat, lauding Harry's exceptional ride and acknowledging the collective effort behind the success.

Richard Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud, owners of Envoi Allen, praised Protektorat's performance and expressed contentment with their horse's strong showing at Cheltenham. Looking ahead, thoughts turned to future races, with Punchestown and Aintree among the potential targets for Protektorat.
