Sir Mark Prescott has praised Sir Michael Stoute as “the most focused trainer of my time” following the announcement that Stoute will retire at the end of the season.
Stoute began his illustrious career in Newmarket in 1972, just two years after Prescott took over the license at Heath House Stables. Prescott, who has also achieved considerable success over the past 50 years, holds immense respect for his Newmarket neighbour. Stoute has been crowned champion trainer ten times and has trained six Derby winners among 16 British Classic victories.
Prescott remarked, “I’m naturally very sad to see him retire, as it leaves me more exposed! He’s undoubtedly the most focused trainer of my generation. When he had a top horse, he was completely dedicated to it. He’s also been a remarkable mentor for jockeys. If he recognized brilliance or flair in a jockey, he went to great lengths to nurture that talent and maximize their potential. His exceptional focus on his top horses and his commitment to developing his jockeys made him an incredibly formidable trainer.”
Prescott quickly realized that Stoute, who was born and raised in Barbados, was destined for greatness in Britain.
“He was assistant to Doug Smith and played a key role in training Sleeping Partner, who won the Oaks in 1969,” Prescott recalled. “When Stoute’s horses first appeared, there were only about eight of them, but they were outstanding from the start. Despite my head start, he quickly surpassed me and went on to achieve even greater success. I attribute his remarkable achievements to his intense focus on his horses and his dedication to mentoring his staff and jockeys.”
