“Pentire is the best middle-distance horse”, Hills

Redemption defined Michael Hills’ emotions when Pentire triumphed in the 1996 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Initially, the Geoff Wragg-trained colt had a modest two-year-old season, with third-place finishes being his best results, leading to him being overlooked for the 1995 Derby.

However, upon returning, Pentire won the Sandown Classic Trial, beating future champion Singspiel, then followed up with victories in the Dee Stakes and the Predominate at Goodwood. Hills noted Pentire's toughness and strong racing spirit, despite earlier foot problems.

His only loss that year came against the unbeaten Lammtarra in the King George, a race Hills felt he could have won. Despite this, they achieved success in subsequent races, including the Irish Champion Stakes.

The following year, Hills faced a tough decision between riding Pentire or Derby winner Shaamit but remained loyal to Pentire, leading to their King George victory. After a successful career, Pentire finished with strong performances in the Dubai World Cup, Eclipse, and Japan Cup but did not excel in softer ground conditions.

Hills regarded Pentire as the best middle-distance horse he rode, surpassing even his Derby day mount, Shaamit, while honouring Further Flight as his all-time favourite.
