Pandora's Gift is ready for a challenging turf debut at Haydock versus Vandeek

Pandora's Gift, the all-weather favourite of Stuart Williams, will race on turf on Saturday in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock.

The three-year-old made her racecourse debut at Chelmsford, finishing second, and went on to win four races in a row.

Striking on return to Chelmsford and then at Southwell and Lingfield, the Churchill daughter returned to Essex earlier this month to compete in the Listed Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes, a race longer than her usual six furlongs.

She easily met the challenge once more, winning by two and a half lengths to get black type and open the door to higher goals for the remainder of the season.

Probably the first of those will be the Group Two sprint, Sandy Lane, which will be the filly's first experience on a grass track and a straight course.

Vandeek, owned by Simon and Ed Crisford, is expected to dominate pre-race talks and the betting market. He is unbeaten and has won two Group One races at two, the Prix Morny and the Middle Park.

Despite Pandora's Gift benefiting from the penalty the grey will carry as well as her fillies' allowance, Williams is realistic about how difficult the task she faces on her turf debut is.

“I’m very happy with her and she’s worked nicely on the grass,” the trainer said. “It’s a big jump up from what she’s been doing on the all-weather, it’s her first run on the grass and also her first run in a straight line – she’s always run round a bend before – so there are a lot of unknowns for us. But there weren’t many options to go for this month, so we thought we’d roll the dice at Haydock. I doubt we’ll be beating Vandeek if he turns up, but I’ll be delighted if she can run into a place.”
