Geelong Cup and Northumberland Plate hero Onesmoothoperator adds a touch of class to Wolverhampton’s Boxing Day racing, competing in the Free Bets With BetUK Bet Club Handicap over a mile and a half.
Trained by Brian Ellison, the globetrotting six-year-old makes his first appearance since finishing a respectable 12th in the prestigious Melbourne Cup, where he was beaten by less than six lengths.
A Year to Remember
Earlier in 2023, Onesmoothoperator made headlines by securing two major victories. In October, he triumphed in the Geelong Cup, earning over £160,000 in prize money. That success followed his crowning achievement in June when he claimed the Northumberland Plate, fulfilling a lifelong dream for Ellison, a native of the northeast.
Road to Dubai
Having returned from Australia, Onesmoothoperator has been given a short break to recharge ahead of his next international venture. Plans are in place for the gelding to travel to Dubai in the new year, with Ellison eyeing lucrative races in January and February, potentially culminating in a spot on Dubai World Cup night.
“He’s had a fantastic year, winning the Plate and the Geelong Cup,” said Ellison. “We gave him a little break after his Melbourne Cup run, and he seems in great form. This race at Wolverhampton is a good prep to set him up for Dubai, so I won’t have to do much with him after this.”
Competition on Boxing Day
Facing just five rivals, Onesmoothoperator will take on Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Claymore, winner of the 2022 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. The field promises a competitive race, with Ellison’s star looking to cap off an exceptional year before embarking on his next globetrotting adventure.
“Hopefully, he can keep his good form going,” Ellison added. “It’s been an amazing season, and we’re looking forward to what’s to come.”
