O'Brien Confident in Family's Breeders' Cup Success

Donnacha O’Brien is optimistic about his family’s chances at the upcoming Breeders' Cup in Del Mar. He aims to secure his first victory at the event with Porta Fortuna, while his father, Aidan O’Brien, hopes for a historic win with City Of Troy in the Classic.

Donnacha, who came close to success last year when Porta Fortuna finished second in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, is excited about her return. Porta Fortuna has thrived in Britain and Ireland this season, winning three Group One races, including the Matron Stakes. Now, she’s set to challenge colts and geldings in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Despite the tough competition, Donnacha believes her versatility and impressive season make her ready for the challenge. "She’s progressing with every run and deserves a shot against the boys," he said.

Porta Fortuna will likely be ridden by Tom Marquand, who has partnered with her throughout most of the season. Marquand is set to ride other contenders in the Breeders' Cup, making him a familiar choice.

In addition to his own entry, Donnacha supports City Of Troy, Aidan’s hopeful in the Classic. Though Aidan has narrowly missed winning this race with past champions, Donnacha feels City Of Troy, with his strong pace and endurance, offers his father one of the best chances in years. "If he can get comfortable in the first few furlongs, I think he could win it," said Donnacha.
