Noel George targets The King George VI Chase

The King George VI Chase is a primary goal for Noel George, who, along with Amanda Zetterholm, trains Il Est Francais as he prepares for his return later this month.

The talented chaser made a memorable impression on Boxing Day at Kempton last year, showcasing exceptional jumping skills under James Reveley to win the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase. A return to Kempton for their Christmas feature has been a key target for 2024. Despite a subdued performance in his only start since and missing the French Gold Cup, connections remain optimistic.

The six-year-old, owned by Richard Kelvin-Hughes and Haras De Saint-Voir, is reported to be in good form by his Chantilly-based team. His seasonal reappearance is planned for the Prix Richard et Robert Hennessy at Auteuil on September 28, a race won last year by Geskille.

"The horse is in great shape and improving daily," said George. "We’re considering the September 28 race as a potential comeback. We’ll use that run to decide if we stay with the French schedule for the King George or race in the UK beforehand. Il Est Francais will guide our plans, but he’s in excellent form, and we’re excited about his return. We also have a few other promising horses that might come to the UK over the winter, but our main focus is on the King George with Il Est Francais."

Il Est Francais is currently among the favourites for the King George, alongside Willie Mullins' promising Cheltenham Festival winner Fact To File.
