Nicholls Eyes Promising Debut for Caldwell Potter at Newbury

Trainer Paul Nicholls is preparing to unveil Caldwell Potter, a high-profile new recruit, at Newbury next week. The six-year-old gelding, formerly trained by Gordon Elliott, was purchased for €740,000 in February by Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason, John Hales, and Peter Done. After skipping the spring season, Caldwell Potter has been carefully prepped for his UK debut.

During a gentle gallop at Newbury on Tuesday, Caldwell Potter worked alongside stablemate Captain Teague, impressing Nicholls with his readiness:

“Caldwell Potter went beautifully. I’m glad we didn’t run him in the spring—he’s a different animal now. He’s had a good prep, looks fantastic, and we’re itching to get him going.”

Both horses are entered for the John Francome Novices' Chase next Friday, though Captain Teague may instead target a three-mile race at Sandown. Nicholls remains confident in their progress, hinting at a long-term plan for Captain Teague to run in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas.

The workout was part of preparations for the Coral Gold Cup, with Nicholls showcasing his contender Kandoo Kid, who has been aimed at the prestigious race since his victory at Aintree.

“I was very pleased with Kandoo Kid—he worked beautifully. Nico [de Boinville] said he felt amazing. He loves Newbury and runs well when fresh, so I’ve always had this race in mind for him.”

Nicholls also provided updates on other runners:

- Inch House, recovering from a past injury, may feature in the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Chase as a prep run.

- Regent’s Stroll, after an impressive gallop, is expected to race at Newbury later this week, depending on the ground conditions.

Other trainers at the Newbury gallops also revealed their plans for the Coral Gold Cup and supporting races:

- Dan Skelton expressed optimism about Heltenham, despite uncertainty about his stamina for the race’s 3-mile-2-furlong trip.

“I think he’ll stay, and he’s unbeaten here, which is helpful.”

- Harry Derham confirmed Queens Gamble as an intended runner in the Gerry Fielden.

- Ben Pauling is weighing up the Coral Gold Cup for Henry’s Friend.

As Newbury’s flagship meeting approaches, anticipation is building for a competitive and high-quality weekend of racing.
