Monbeg Genius, an aspirant for the prestigious Grand National, is primed for the preparatory race at Kelso

Jonjo O’Neill has pencilled in a trip to Kelso for Monbeg Genius, a prominent contender in the upcoming Randox Grand National.

On Friday (Feb. 10), the British Horseracing Authority confirmed that the gelding has been granted permission to participate, as the assets of owners Baroness Michelle Mone and Doug Barrowman are not subject to the restraint order.

Monbeg Genius, adorned in the distinctive Barrowman Racing silks, last showcased its talent with a commendable third-place finish in the Coral Gold Cup in December. Unfortunately, subsequent plans were thwarted by an unforeseen setback. Nevertheless, O’Neill reveals that the horse is steadily making a comeback, with the bet365 Premier Chase at Kelso on March 2 and a potential appearance at the illustrious Cheltenham Festival being considered as stepping stones on the path to Aintree in April.

"He was always going to run as far as I was concerned and no one told me or him!"

— asserts O’Neill.

The Listed chase at Kelso marks the initial objective, with the Grand National as the ultimate prize. While a return to the Ultima cannot be ruled out, O’Neill acknowledges the proximity of the races and the need for careful consideration.

Presently, Monbeg Genius appears to be in splendid form, exhibiting commendable jumping skills and displaying the characteristics of a resilient long-distance runner. As anticipation builds, Monbeg Genius is positioned as one of the joint-favourites at odds as low as 14-1 for the eagerly awaited Grand National on April 13.
