The talented Minella Drama, a star from Old Roan, will not take part in the Grand Sefton Chase set for next weekend at Aintree, although a future run over the National fences remains a possibility. Donald McCain’s nine-year-old kicked off his season in style with an impressive front-running victory on Sunday, capturing Grade Two honours at 3-1 under jockey Brian Hughes.
This latest win marks the eighth victory in a distinguished career for the popular gelding, who has only finished out of the money twice in 23 outings across hurdles and fences. Although Minella Drama entered for the Grand Sefton on November 9, the timing is too soon for him to make his debut over the Grand National fences, despite a positive recovery from the Old Roan.
"He's in great shape and cantered smoothly this morning," McCain noted. "It was wonderful for him to have such a significant win; he has consistently delivered strong performances, and we’ve always believed in his potential for a big day."
While McCain is exploring various options for races, he emphasised the need to be patient with Minella Drama's preparation. "We haven’t finalised plans yet, as it’s essential not to rush him back into racing," he added. "The Grand National track could be an option for his future, but I wouldn’t consider entering him for the original course just yet."
