Messages of support leave the seriously injured jockey feeling overwhelmed

Graham Lee, a celebrated jockey with Grand National and Ascot Gold Cup triumphs, expressed his overwhelming appreciation for the outpouring of support he and his family have received following a life-altering fall.

The incident occurred during a race at Newcastle racecourse on November 10th, when Graham was unseated from his horse, Ben Macdui, and suffered a significant neck injury. He was swiftly transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle and later moved to the esteemed spinal unit at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

In a statement released on February 10th, the 48-year-old jockey broke his silence to express his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of himself, his wife Becky, and their children Amy and Robbie. Graham shared that while he feels somewhat secluded within the James Cook Spinal Unit, he is immensely touched by the multitude of messages they have received. He also emphasised the unwavering support of his dear friends, who visit him regularly, bolstering his spirits during this challenging period.

Boasting a remarkable career spanning both jumps and flat racing, Graham amassed over 1,000 victories, including a triumphant ride in the Grand National astride Amberleigh House in 2004. Despite his impressive accomplishments, he modestly admitted,

"I never really considered that I had achieved much as a jockey".

Graham marvelled at the overwhelming number of individuals keeping him and his family in their thoughts. He acknowledged the hardships they face but highlighted how these messages of support provide immeasurable solace.

Furthermore, Graham expressed his deep appreciation for the exceptional care and support provided by the remarkable team of nurses at the spinal unit. He revealed their plans to adapt their home, as they have recently obtained planning permission, allowing them to commence the necessary modifications.

These alterations aim to cater to Graham's specific needs, fostering a hopeful atmosphere for his eventual discharge from the hospital in the coming months. Graham concluded his statement by conveying his genuine humility and profound gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received.

Amy, Graham's 18-year-old daughter, established a fundraising page that quickly amassed over £80,000 for the Injured Jockeys Fund. The total continues to soar and currently stands at an ever-increasing sum of over £191,000, a testament to the remarkable generosity and compassion extended by countless individuals.
