Matilda Picotte makes a return to Doncaster

Matilda Picotte is set to make a return to Doncaster following a narrow defeat in the Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary on Sunday.

The front-running filly, trained by Kieran Cotter, finished second in the Group Three event last year before claiming victory in the Sceptre Fillies' Stakes at Doncaster shortly thereafter.

Connections are hopeful for a repeat performance at Doncaster, following her recent near-miss where she was overtaken in the final strides despite a courageous front-running effort.

Cotter commented: "She came back a bit tired, but she’s healthy. She finished second in that race last year, and that final 110 yards always seems to be her undoing. It’s tough to see her get caught again, especially given how hard she fought."

He continued: "The plan remains the same as last year. We’ll aim for the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster and hope for some rain to aid her chances. She has proven form at the track, so we’re looking to secure another win there."

Matilda Picotte won the Sceptre Stakes convincingly in 2023 and went on to capture the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket later in the autumn. The Challenge Stakes is also on her radar, but Cotter might consider a venture to ParisLongchamp for the Prix de la Forêt, Europe’s premier open-age Group One over her preferred distance, if all goes well in South Yorkshire.

Cotter added: "Doncaster fits well with her schedule, and while she’s entered in the Foret, we’ll see how things go before making any decisions. The Challenge Stakes is an option too, though it might conflict with a trip to France."

"We’re optimistic that dropping back to seven furlongs will work in her favour. Her pace over the distance is exceptional, and while she’s tough to match, opponents have to be cautious not to let her get too far ahead. We have plenty to look forward to."
