Joanna Mason is filled with pride as she celebrates a significant milestone—riding her 100th winner for her grandfather, Mick Easterby.
Starting her journey in point-to-point racing while also taking Flat rides as an amateur, Mason made the switch to the professional ranks when COVID restrictions allowed only professionals to compete. This decision has proven fruitful, as she has had a strong season so far, riding 59 winners and earning a spot on the Ladies’ Team at the Shergar Cup for the second time.
Mason is the granddaughter of renowned Yorkshire trainer Mick Easterby, who, at 93, continues to train alongside his son, David. The stable has played a vital role in her success, and she reached her milestone at Ayr on Thursday when Yorkshire Lady won a 10-furlong fillies’ handicap.
"It’s been a pleasure to achieve 100 winners for my grandad. Four others have done it, so joining the likes of Paul Mulrennan, Eddie Hide, Terry Lucas, and Nathan Evans is an honour," she said.
"My journey began in pointing; my mum and auntie were involved, and David also rode in point-to-points. My cousin was a champion point-to-point rider, and my sister rode a few as well. Now I’m the last one riding, so my grandad calls me ‘the swansong!’"
Reflecting on her grandfather, who was present at Ayr to celebrate the occasion, Mason added: "He’s in great spirits and loves trips to Ayr, as well as his days at York and Beverley. It was really special for him to see me reach my 100th winner."
Yorkshire Lady is no stranger to the winner’s enclosure, boasting seven victories, five of which were with Mason aboard. She is a beloved and aptly named favourite at the Easterby yard in Sheriff Hutton, York.
"She’s definitely a yard favourite; I’ve won several races on her," Mason noted. "We have a soft spot for her since she’s homebred by her owner. We’ve known her since she was a foal, and as she has progressed, I’ve grown with her."
