Stuart Edmunds’ star mare Marsh Wren will miss the busy Christmas racing period due to a bruised foot. The eight-year-old, who finished third in the Mares’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season, had returned this year with a dominant Listed win at Market Rasen, where she defeated the highly regarded Apple Away by 16 lengths.
Despite her promising form, plans for a potential run in an event at Fairyhouse in the new year are now uncertain.
“She’s got a bit of a problem with a foot, so she’s at the vets at the minute,” said Edmunds. “It’s a deep-seated bruise that she actually had before Market Rasen, but it’s flared up again. The vets can’t say how long she’ll be out, but she’s definitely ruled out for Christmas.”
While Marsh Wren recovers, Edmunds’ yard will still be represented during the festive season by rising star Miami Magic in the Grade One Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on Boxing Day. The five-year-old has caught attention with back-to-back hurdle wins by a combined 22 lengths, earning his step up in class.
“The Formby is probably next for him,” said Edmunds. “Moving the Tolworth from Sandown to Aintree works in his favour, as all his form so far is on flat tracks.”
Though Miami Magic has excelled at shorter distances, Edmunds believes he could prove versatile as his career progresses.
“I don’t think he’s an out-and-out two-miler. I think two-and-a-half miles could suit him well. He does look quite nice.”
As Miami Magic takes on tougher competition, Edmunds is optimistic about his potential, despite the challenges of racing in such a competitive division.
