Lossiemouth cemented her status as a hurdling superstar with a commanding win in Fairyhouse's Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. The Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old, unbeaten last season with Grade One triumphs at Cheltenham and Punchestown, returned to action as the 4-7 favourite in a field of four.
Under a measured ride by Paul Townend, Lossiemouth bided her time behind the pace set by dual race winner Teahupoo, who took the lead in the home straight. The mare effortlessly swept past to secure a three-and-three-quarter-length victory when asked for an effort.
Following the win, Betfair cut her odds for the Champion Hurdle to 6-4 from 9-4, highlighting her growing reputation.
Mullins Praises Lossiemouth’s Speed
“It was very impressive; they went steady, which suited us,” said Mullins. “She has that bit of speed, and her pedigree reflects it. When it came down to a sprint, I thought she would always win.”
Mullins also highlighted Lossiemouth’s rich bloodlines, referencing her dam’s connection to Lord Glitters, a top-class miler.
Future Plans and Stable Dynamics
With reigning Champion Hurdler State Man also in his stable, Mullins plans to keep his stars apart for now.
“There’s no point knocking heads just yet. State Man will likely go to Leopardstown at Christmas, while we’ll look at options for her, though the International Hurdle might not suit this year.”
Lossiemouth’s emphatic return has solidified her position among the season’s top hurdlers, setting the stage for a potential showdown later in the campaign.
