Lord Accord Aims to Go One Better in Wincanton's Handicap Chase

Lord Accord will seek redemption in the 63rd Badger Beer Handicap Chase at Wincanton on Saturday, hoping to improve on his strong 2022 performance, where he placed second behind the revitalized Frodon. Despite being given nearly two stone, Neil Mulholland’s nine-year-old could not overcome the Ryanair Chase and King George winner that day.

After a somewhat lacklustre season, Mulholland rejuvenated Lord Accord with two hurdle outings, including a victory at Sedgefield. Lord Accord then returned to Wincanton for his latest start, leading from the front and jumping impressively to win by 16 lengths.

Mulholland is hopeful his charge will benefit from the current ground conditions, which suit Lord Accord's preference for good footing. "I’m probably in the minority, but I’m hoping the ground stays as it is," said Mulholland. "He has course and distance form, a recent run, and he’s feeling good—he ticks a lot of boxes."

With a top weight of £80,000, the Sam Thomas-trained Al Dancer leads the field. Last year’s winning trainer, Anthony Honeyball, will also return with three entries: Forward Plan, Lord Baddesley, and Gustavian.
