Kingscote might add French Derby honours to its collection of Epsom triumphs

Richard Kingscote, who will be running alongside Ghostwriter in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly on Sunday, has the support of Clive Cox to succeed.

The colt owned by Jeff Smith has been ridden by the Derby-winning jockey in four of his three career races. Back in August, the pair made their debut together and won a maiden at Newmarket.

The son of Invincible Spirit then won at Ascot the next month, and William Buick rode along, but Kingscote got back in the saddle for a big triumph in the Royal Lodge back at Newmarket after the season.

Ghostwriter made his debut at age three in the Rowley Mile 2000 Guineas, where he was trained by Kingscote to finish in a very solid fourth place in the season's first Colts' Classic, a form that is already paying off.

The French Derby is now approaching, and Kingscote intends to keep the ride to try and add the victory to the Epsom victory he obtained in 2022 when riding the Desert Crown, trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

“Richard will 100 per cent ride and I’m really pleased, he rode a superb Group Two winner for us in the Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday,” said Cox, referring to Kerdos’ weekend triumph. “He’s won on him (Ghostwriter) twice and he rode him in the 2000 Guineas as well.”

Of the plan of attack this weekend, Cox added: “I don’t think he’s complicated, we can organise our plans according to how the draw provides us with choices. He is very versatile and very balanced, I’m more than happy. The better draw you get, the better you sleep at night, but in the meantime, I’m happy that he’s a balanced horse and we will make our plans according to the draw.”
