Exciting young talent Kel Du Large, trained by Jane Williams, has extended his winning streak following a successful transition to hurdling at Hereford.
Despite this triumph, the promising four-year-old will not be competing in any major spring festivals, as his connections opt for a more cautious approach.
Kel Du Large had already made a mark with two impressive wins in bumpers, triumphing over recent Flat winner Caustic at Exeter and claiming victory in Listed company at Cheltenham. Building on this success, he entered the Daily Racing Specials At PlanetSportBet Junior ‘National Hunt’ Hurdle as the 8-15 favourite and delivered a convincing performance.
Under the guidance of jockey David Noonan, Kel Du Large took the lead from the start, closely followed by his main rival Kalif D’Airy. Despite a slight error at the third last hurdle, Noonan skillfully guided his mount to victory, with Don Virginia posing a late challenge.
Reflecting on the race, Noonan praised Kel Du Large's adaptability and composure, stating,
“He was very good. He did a bit of everything; he popped, he stood off. He kept finding and responding to pressure.”
Although Kel Du Large shows promise for higher-level races, his owners are opting to give him more time to develop. Co-owner Tom Chadney expressed satisfaction with the horse's performance, acknowledging the expert training provided by Jane Williams. Looking ahead, Chadney highlighted the importance of maintaining Kel Du Large's well-being, as they plan to rest him for the remainder of the season.
