Joseph O’Brien celebrated consecutive victories in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot 2024 with Uxmal, marking a fitting end to the prestigious event.
Last year's winner Dawn Rising, also trained by O’Brien and owned by JP McManus, returned to defend the title in the extended two-mile-five-furlong marathon. Under the guidance of William Buick, Dawn Rising led into the home stretch. However, it was stablemate Uxmal, the 2-1 favourite ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, who surged ahead and maintained a commanding lead to secure victory.
Veteran competitor Run For Oscar, who finished third the previous year, made a late charge to claim second place, but Uxmal crossed the finish line comfortably ahead, winning by five lengths.
This triumph marked O’Brien's fourth victory at Royal Ascot as a trainer and a memorable first for jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle. Reflecting on the achievement, McMonagle expressed his gratitude to the O’Brien team, emphasising the significance of winning at such a prestigious venue.
O’Brien expressed his delight at securing a win, especially for the Niarchos team, highlighting the significance of achieving success at Ascot. He praised Uxmal as an exciting prospect for future races and commended McMonagle for his exceptional ride, which also marked the jockey’s maiden victory at Royal Ascot.
Acknowledging the importance of the win for the O’Brien family, with father Aidan and brother Donnacha also tasting success during the event, Joseph O’Brien emphasised the support of owners and staff that contributed to their collective achievements at Royal Ascot.
