Jane Williams Celebrates Newbury Double with Javert Allen and Saint Segal

Jane Williams enjoyed a standout afternoon at Newbury on Wednesday, securing a double with Javert Allen and Saint Segal, both of whom delivered polished jumping performances.

Javert Allen, an enthusiastic performer who opened his chasing account at Chepstow in November, was the 9-5 favourite in the Hooorrrrraaayyy It’s Christmas Queens Arms Handicap Chase. Taking the lead early, he demonstrated bold and consistent jumping under Ciaran Gethings. Although Harper’s Brook loomed as a threat between the final two fences, Javert Allen maintained his momentum to claim victory by two and a quarter lengths.

Williams expressed her delight:

"As a novice taking on handicappers, you’re always nervous. His jumping today was more measured than at Chepstow—he seemed settled and happy, which made for a more attractive round. I’m very pleased."

The trainer quickly followed up in the BetVictor Home Of The Lucky Dip Handicap Chase with Saint Segal, who dominated from the front to secure an 11-length triumph under Jonathan Burke. This win marked Burke’s third on the card, following earlier victories aboard Alan King’s Believitanducan and Emma Lavelle’s King Califet.

Of Saint Segal, Williams said:

"He’s always been talented, but luck hasn’t been with him. Today was his day, and it was great to see him show his true ability."

The success rounded out a fruitful day for the Devon-based trainer, who also celebrated a promising fourth-place finish from her bumper runner.

"Occasionally, something has to go right!" Williams quipped.

Controversy with Captain Bellamy

In the Visit Warren Greatrex Racing At Rhonehurst EBF Stallions “NH” Novices’ Hurdle, Paul Nicholls’ Captain Bellamy won under Lorcan Williams at odds of 7-2. However, Williams appeared to exceed the permitted whip limit of seven strikes, potentially putting the victory in jeopardy.

Nicholls expressed frustration, stating:

"Rules are rules, and I can’t do anything about it. Seven is seven, and if you hit 11 times, what do you expect? Whether you like the rules or not, you have to abide by them."

The matter will be reviewed by the Whip Review Committee, and disqualification could be on the cards if the infraction is confirmed.

Herakles Westwood Shines for Greatrex

Elsewhere, Warren Greatrex continued his strong form with Herakles Westwood, who justified his 5-2 favouritism in the JM Finn Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase. Guided by James Bowen, the runner delivered a decisive performance to close out an eventful card at Newbury.
