J J Slevin will miss Fastorslow’s seasonal reappearance

Trainer Martin Brassil has confirmed that jockey J J Slevin will miss Fastorslow’s seasonal reappearance in the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase as he continues to recover from a foot injury. Slevin, who fractured the cuboid bone in his foot six weeks ago, had hoped to return in time but is now targeting a comeback closer to Christmas.

Derek O’Connor Steps In

With Slevin unavailable, leading amateur Derek O’Connor will take the reins aboard the eight-year-old, owned by Sean and Bernardine Mulryan. O’Connor will guide Fastorslow, who last raced in May, defeating Galopin Des Champs in the Punchestown Gold Cup.

Brassil acknowledged the setback:

“It is a blow. We were hoping he [Slevin] would be back in six or seven weeks, but it’s taking a bit longer. Hopefully, he’ll make a good recovery and be back around Christmas.”

Fastorslow Prepares for Strong Return

Despite the change in jockey, Fastorslow is reportedly in excellent condition ahead of his return. Brassil expressed confidence in the gelding’s readiness, noting:

“He seems very well. Everything has gone smoothly, so he’s more or less in the same place as last year heading into the John Durkan. His first run of the season should bring him on, so we’re looking for him to improve after this.”

Rivalry with Galopin Des Champs Continues

Fastorslow’s performances at Punchestown have already seen him best rival Galopin Des Champs three times, including last season’s Punchestown Gold Cup. Brassil acknowledged the competitive field, emphasising how minor factors can shift outcomes:

“There’s a good rivalry going on. You look at all those good horses, and there isn’t a huge amount between them depending on the day, the tactics, and how they show up.”

Ground Conditions Favourable

With rain forecasted, Brassil is optimistic about Fastorslow’s adaptability to varying ground conditions:

“The rain won’t do him any harm. He’s very versatile and can handle anything from yielding to soft to heavy.”

Fastorslow will aim to defend his title and build on his impressive record at Punchestown when he lines up this weekend.
