Impervious Gearing Up for Long-Awaited Return

Trainer Colm Murphy remains uncertain about the next destination for his stable star Impervious but assures fans the mare is "all systems go" for her highly anticipated return.

The eight-year-old remains unbeaten over fences following a stellar 2022-23 campaign, during which she claimed five consecutive victories, including three Grade Two titles. Her crowning moment came at last year’s Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase at Cheltenham, where she rallied brilliantly to defeat Allegorie De Vassy by two and a half lengths. She later confirmed her dominance with an emphatic 11-length victory at Punchestown.

However, a setback sidelined Impervious for the entirety of last season, and she has not been seen on the track in 20 months. Since returning to training in Killenagh over the summer, Murphy has exercised patience, ensuring her full recovery.

“She’s good, very good. We are very happy with her at the moment,” Murphy said. “I’m very fortunate that the lads are incredibly patient. She’s wanted for nothing, and she’s getting a clear run between now and when she’s ready to race.”

Despite positive signs, Murphy confirmed Impervious will not feature over the Christmas period, with a return in the new year now a more likely target.

“Oh, she’s back all right. She’s herself again and has done well—she’s a big, strong mare now,” he added. “JP (McManus) and Frankie (Berry) have ensured she’s had everything she needs—absolutely the best of care.”

While her exact return date remains undecided, Murphy is optimistic:

“She won’t make Christmas—that will come a bit too soon. I’m hoping the new year will favour us, though I can’t say yet where she’ll start. But she’ll be all systems go when the time comes.
“She’s due to do some serious pieces of work, and we’ll know more after that. So far, so good—fingers crossed.”
