Ile Atlantique, trained by Willie Mullins, is set to make his second appearance over fences next month following a commanding debut performance at Navan. The six-year-old, owned by Tony Bloom, showcased his potential in the QuinnBet Beginners Chase, finishing nine lengths ahead of Waterford Whispers, with Good Land further back in third.
Previously, Ile Atlantique had made a strong start to his hurdling career, securing a 19-length victory on debut and narrowly missing out on the Grade One Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle title. However, his form dipped at top-tier events, placing third at Cheltenham and finishing outside the top three at Aintree and Punchestown.
The gelding transitioned to chasing this season, and his Navan performance under jockey Paul Townend demonstrated significant improvement. Leading from the front, he confidently tackled the fences, apart from a minor mistake, solidifying his status as a promising chaser.
Racing manager Sean Graham highlighted the horse’s development, praising his strength and jumping ability. “He’s a much bigger, stronger horse this year, and the way he jumped was a huge positive. He proved he could handle the fences in a highly competitive race,” Graham noted.
While Christmas races may come too soon, plans are underway for Ile Atlantique to target a novice chase in mid-to-late January. With his recent success and solid competition in pursuit, the horse is well-positioned to build on his promising start over fences.
