A shot at the prestigious Ladbrokes King George VI Chase remains within reach for Il Est Français, as connections await confirmation of his fitness ahead of Kempton's Christmas highlight.
The six-year-old dazzled at Kempton last year, delivering a dominant 11-length victory in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase. That performance had firmly positioned him as a leading contender for this season’s King George. His impressive seasonal return at Auteuil in September further bolstered those hopes.
However, his form took a hit after he was pulled up in the Prix la Haye Jousselin at Auteuil. Despite extensive veterinary tests revealing no significant underlying issues, the team remains cautious as they monitor his recovery.
Trainer Noel George explained: “He’s been thoroughly checked—scans, X-rays, you name it—and while there was something that stopped him, there’s nothing overly serious or unfixable.”
“He’s back in light work, and we’ll have a clearer picture in the next couple of weeks after a proper workout. If he’s in good form, the King George is very much on the table.”
“He’s spectacular when he’s on form but has had the odd off-day. If we can have him at his best, he’ll have a real chance on the big stage.”
Meanwhile, stablemate General En Chef, an accomplished Grade One performer in France, could also join the King George lineup if he runs well in Saturday’s Coral Gold Cup at Newbury.
George added: “If he’s competitive at Newbury, we’ll seriously consider the King George for him as well. He’s a lovely horse and deserves a chance in a race like that.”
With two talented contenders potentially heading to Kempton, the George-Zetterholm team could have a strong hand in one of the season’s marquee events.
