Ryan Moore delivered an exceptional ride as Heavens Gate showcased her determination to win the Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh.
A consistent performer for Aidan O’Brien this season, she followed her maiden victory at this track earlier in the summer with solid placements in the Albany Stakes and Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. The daughter of Churchill previously secured €148,500 by winning the Ballyhane Stakes and had another commendable outing in the Lowther at York, setting the standard for this Group Three event as she stepped up to seven furlongs.
Tracking the early pace set by Joseph O’Brien’s Mojave River, Heavens Gate smoothly made her way into contention. When asked to go between horses with a furlong remaining, she lowered her head and surged ahead.
Gavin Cromwell’s Fiery Lucy pushed her hard in the final furlong, but the 11-8 favourite was resolute, notching her third win of the season.
"Ryan believes she’ll get a mile if ridden patiently. He noted that she quickened well and was very pleased with her," said O’Brien. "She deserved that after two big performances."
When asked about the possibility of a Breeders’ Cup appearance later this autumn, O’Brien responded, "It’s very possible. She has plenty of speed, which is essential for turning bends."
