Emma Lavelle’s General Medrano returns to Newbury for the Hooorrrrraaayyy It’s Christmas Queens Arms Handicap Chase, following his emphatic victory at the track last time out.
The seven-year-old, owned by Elite Racing Club, has enjoyed a strong start to the season since making his comeback in November. He finished a close second in a competitive Haydock handicap on his seasonal debut before storming to a dominant nine-length victory at Newbury, showcasing excellent jumping throughout.
Set to run again under Ben Jones, General Medrano has been handed a significant 10-pound rise in the handicap for his impressive display. However, Lavelle remains optimistic about his chances, given the horse’s current form and well-being.
“He’s been great and came out of the race really well. He feels in good shape and is in very good form with himself,” Lavelle commented.
“He went up 10 pounds for winning at Newbury last time, but he was impressive doing it, so he probably deserved that rise. It’ll make life a bit tougher, but he seems in excellent condition, and if he turns up in the same form, he should run another big race.
“He’s been an absolute star. His key asset is his jumping, and he’s a real pleasure to have anything to do with.”
The Newbury card also features the Get Best Odds Guaranteed At BetVictor Juvenile Hurdle, where James Owen’s Liam Swagger will bid to extend his unbeaten run over hurdles to three. The gelding has impressed since transitioning from the Flat in the autumn and is one to watch in this competitive juvenile contest.
