Lorna Fowler is set to take a gamble by aiming Colonel Mustard towards the prestigious Unibet Champion Hurdle following his commendable second-place finish in the Kingwell Hurdle.
The seasoned nine-year-old has been a consistent performer in both hurdles and fences in recent seasons, boasting only two career wins but securing second place on nine occasions. Noteworthy performances include a third-place finish in the 2022 County Hurdle behind State Man and another third place in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle at Punchestown last April.
Returning to hurdles at Grade Two level at Wincanton after a brief stint over fences before Christmas, Colonel Mustard, ridden by Daryl Jacob, faced a small field of five and started at 5-1 odds. Despite challenging heavy conditions, he displayed a patient ride and made a valiant effort in the home straight, ultimately finishing a length and a half behind Nemean Lion, with Goshen trailing by 15 lengths in third place.
Fowler expressed her pride in Colonel Mustard's performance, stating,
"We were so proud of him; that is undoubtedly the best he has ever finished in a race".
Acknowledging the winner's strong performance, Fowler highlighted Colonel Mustard's consistency and determination over the years, emphasising his genuine character and competitive spirit.
With an eye on the Champion Hurdle, Fowler and connections are eager to accept the challenge, particularly given Colonel Mustard's history of excelling at major events.
"We're going for the Champion Hurdle; it's not easy to find races for him to win,"
Fowler remarked, underscoring the significance of competing in such a prestigious race.
Recognising the unpredictability of horse racing, Fowler remains optimistic about Colonel Mustard's chances, stating,
"He does have a chance in my opinion, and we have to take it".
With regard to the thrill of participating in significant races, Fowler highlighted the uncertainties inherent in the sport and the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.
