Flooring Porter delivered a front-running performance to win National Handicap

Dual Stayers’ Hurdle winner Flooring Porter delivered an electrifying front-running performance to dominate the Grade 3 Guinness Kerry National Handicap Chase at Listowel.

Lightly raced over fences, the nine-year-old was making just his fifth appearance over the larger obstacles, having debuted in handicap company at a significantly shorter distance at Killarney last time out.

Racing off a mark 10 pounds below his hurdles rating, the Gavin Cromwell-trained gelding showcased his class with an authoritative display, establishing a commanding lead early in the race.

By halfway, he was clear, and jockey Keith Donoghue was looking around for nonexistent challengers after three out, able to ease down after clearing the penultimate fence. Flooring Porter effortlessly popped the last and coasted home for a hugely impressive four-and-a-quarter-length victory.

"What can I say? It was brilliant," said Gavin Cromwell. "He went hard, and I was praying for him to get over every fence on the last circuit. He just kept the momentum going; it was a fantastic performance."

When asked if he was concerned Flooring Porter might falter in front, he replied, "No, that wasn’t a worry. I just hoped he wouldn’t miss a jump. He was in serious shape. Once he finds his rhythm, there’s no stopping him."

Donoghue remarked that he felt like a mere passenger, saying, "He couldn’t go any slower! You just try to meet the jumps as best you can."

"This has been the plan since Cheltenham. We could always return to hurdles, but I’m not sure what’s next," Cromwell continued. "This is a brilliant race to win, and we’ll enjoy it. He’s been a horse of a lifetime for me and for the syndicate."
