Eydon to Make Long-Awaited Return in BetUK Winter Derby

Eydon, once a hopeful contender for the Derby, has been out of action since April 2022.

However, he is set to make a comeback in the BetUK Winter Derby at Southwell, aiming to honour his sire, Olden Times.

The talented horse, victorious in the Feilden Stakes under Roger Varian's guidance back in 2022, had his last race placing fourth in the 2000 Guineas due to an injury before the 2022 Derby. This setback marked the beginning of a series of issues that have kept him away from the track for almost two years.

Under the training of Andrew Balding now, Eydon missed the entire 2023 season. Nevertheless, after an encouraging run at Kempton, he seems to be in excellent condition and is all set to compete in the Group Three event, now extended to 11 furlongs. Kevin Stott will be his partner for this event, marking their first collaboration.

Ted Voute, the racing adviser to Eydon's owner Prince Faisal, expressed optimism about Eydon's return, acknowledging the rigorous effort required to bring him back to form after such a long absence. Voute mentioned,

"It will be some training feat to get him back and to the level of fitness required to run creditably after such a length of time off. But, touch wood, Andrew is pleased with him and thinks he will run a nice race".

Eydon's appearance in the upcoming race not only aims to secure a spot for Dubai World Cup night but also serves as a tribute to his sire, Olden Times, who passed away recently at 25 years old. Voute commented on Eydon's potential entry in the Sheema Classic in Dubai, stating,

"He has an entry in Dubai (in the Sheema Classic), but that is rather far-fetched at the moment".

He further added,

"He would have to beat Lord North or run very respectably against him, but we will see how we get on. We keep our fingers crossed and his owner has had incredible faith in him and patience which in this day and age is quite unusual".

The racing world eagerly awaits Eydon's return, hoping he can follow in his father's footsteps and achieve great success despite the challenges ahead.
