Emma Lavelle’s cherished long-distance hurdler, Paisley Park, has concluded his racing career following a disappointing performance at the Cheltenham Festival. The 12-year-old has been a prominent figure in long-distance hurdle races in recent years, achieving an undefeated streak in the 2018-19 season, culminating in victory in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle.
Since then, he has consistently participated in the event, securing third place in both 2021 and 2022. Alongside his notable success in this race, he boasts victories in three Long Walk Hurdles, three Cleeve Hurdles, and a Long Distance Hurdle. These accomplishments, part of his 11-win record, establish him as a standout and dependable presence in his field.
Despite his advancing years, Paisley Park demonstrated his enduring talent this season by finishing a close second in the Long Distance, Long Walk, and Cleeve races. He entered the Stayers’ Hurdle with odds of 14-1 but settled for 10th place, prompting his connections to declare his immediate retirement. The decision was made after a remarkable career under the care of his devoted owner, Andrew Gemmell, who is visually impaired.
Lavelle expressed her gratitude, acknowledging Paisley Park's contributions:
“There is much to appreciate about his career. What lies ahead remains uncertain, as Andrew desires to keep him close. Despite his age, he remains versatile and a pleasure to ride."
"The timing of his retirement is apt. We had taken each race this season as it came, but his unwavering efforts were evident. It's regrettable that he couldn't secure one final victory. Today’s race was a significant test, revealing a decline in his speed and agility. Recognizing this, Andrew and I reached the decision that, having given us so much, he has fulfilled his duties."
Gemmel reflected on his fondest memory of Paisley Park, recalling a memorable win:
“That moment when he stumbled yet triumphed at the last hurdle stands out for me. It’s time to bid farewell. His racing journey has been remarkable, and the time has come to conclude it. He has been exceptional."
