Gordon Elliott faces a daunting challenge as Gerri Colombe aims to outshine the formidable Galopin Des Champs in the upcoming Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup next month.
Trained by Willie Mullins, Galopin Des Champs triumphed in the race last season and has shown a resurgence with wins in the Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown after a couple of setbacks. On the other hand, Gerri Colombe, a three-time Grade One-winning novice last season, made a solid start in open company but was convincingly bested by Galopin Des Champs over the festive period.
Elliott acknowledges the significant challenge ahead, with a substantial gap to close after the Savills Chase. Despite the tough competition, he remains optimistic about Gerri Colombe's chances, especially with improved ground conditions.
In addition to Gerri Colombe's bid, Elliott is preparing a dual assault for the Ryanair Chase, with Conflated and Fil Dor in contention. While Conflated aims to drop back in distance following a recent unseating, Fil Dor is set to step up in trip and will carry the colours of Robcour at Cheltenham.
Found A Fifty will seek Elliott's first-ever Arkle Trophy victory after a strong performance in the Irish equivalent, while Zanahiyr is poised to make a fence debut in the Turners' Novices' Chase after a third-place finish in last season's Champion Hurdle.
Elliott eyes success in the Glenfarclas Chase with Delta Work, hoping to outshine rivals Galvin and Coko Beach. Salvador Ziggy and Riviere D'Etel are also backed for promising performances in the National Hunt Chase and Mares' Chase respectively.
