Economics and Calandagan Set for Showdown

The highly anticipated clash between Economics and Calandagan is confirmed for the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot this British Champions Day. Both horses are eyeing glory in this signature event, adding excitement to the lineup.

Trained by William Haggas, Economics aims to join an elite group of horses that have won both the Irish Champion Stakes and the British equivalent in a single year. His recent victory over Auguste Rodin at Leopardstown showcased his remarkable talent.

On the other hand, French contender Calandagan, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, is no stranger to Ascot success, having won the King Edward VII Stakes earlier this season. He last competed at York, where he chased down City Of Troy in the Juddmonte International.

The competition heats up with the inclusion of Iresine, another French challenger from Jean-Pierre Gauvin, and Aidan O’Brien’s Los Angeles, who previously finished close to Economics in the Irish Champion Stakes before placing in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Currently, Paddy Power sees tight odds between the two favourites, with Calandagan gaining momentum due to his proven ability on soft ground. As excitement builds for Saturday’s race, bettors are curious to see how the odds will shift as post time approaches.

In addition to the Champion Stakes, other thrilling races are lined up, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the British Champions Long Distance Cup, featuring stiff competition from talented horses.
