Djelo, trained by Venetia Williams, is targeting the Trustatrader Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon on December 8 following an encouraging seasonal return in Exeter’s Haldon Gold Cup.
The six-year-old, who impressed during his novice chasing campaign with a runner-up finish in the Grade One Scilly Isles and a third-place effort in the Turners Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham, made a strong reappearance. Sent off as the 7-4 favourite, he finished a determined second, three-quarters of a length behind JPR One.
Williams plans to step Djelo back up to two and a half miles for the Peterborough Chase but emphasises his adaptability to different distances based on ground conditions.
“He’ll probably head to the Peterborough Chase in a couple of weeks,” Williams said. “We’re moving him up in trip slightly, but he’s versatile. While he ran out of racecourse at Exeter on good ground, he might still handle shorter distances on testing ground.”
Djelo’s promising return suggests he is set for another competitive season as he steps up to face experienced opposition.
