Frankie Dettori expressed his excitement at reuniting with Emily Upjohn at Del Mar on Wednesday, affirming that preparations are “all systems go” for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Turf on Saturday. Previously guided to two Group One victories by Dettori, including the Coronation Cup at Epsom, Emily Upjohn has had Kieran Shoemark in the saddle for her recent outings, where she finished closely in the Prix Vermeille.
Dettori, back in the United States after relocating, led Emily in a workout, noting his pleasure in facing new challenges. “It’s been better than expected, and the experience here at my age is refreshing," he remarked. He highlighted Emily's adaptability and positive attitude during the training session.
John Gosden echoed Dettori's sentiments, emphasising the importance of acclimatising to the Del Mar track. He noted Emily's consistent performances but acknowledged the challenges of the wet ground during some races this season. With a favourable draw in stall two, he feels confident in her competitiveness against a strong field.
Choosing to run in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, rather than the Filly & Mare event, was strategic—Gosden believes Emily’s stamina suits the longer distance best. With solid preparations underway, both Gosden and Dettori anticipate Emily Upjohn will be well-prepared to contend for victory.
