Constitution Hill's Workout Shakes Up Champion Hurdle Market

Constitution Hill's uncertain participation in the upcoming Unibet Champion Hurdle has caused a stir in the horse racing world.

The reigning champion's readiness for the prestigious event came into question after a lacklustre performance during a recent workout at Kempton Park, just ahead of the Cheltenham races.

In a customary move, trainer Nicky Henderson took his stable of Festival hopefuls, including the undefeated Constitution Hill, for a workout at the Sunbury circuit. The talented horse had previously only competed in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day this season.

Following the disappointing workout, bookmakers swiftly halted betting activities, and Henderson revealed to the PA news agency that Constitution Hill's examination revealed signs of mucus, causing concern for his condition.

"In today's routine gallop, Constitution Hill's performance was below par, and after the veterinary examination, it was discovered that he has mucus present," explained Henderson. "We are sending a sample for analysis to determine its significance, and further updates will follow."

Henderson reflected on the unpredictability of horse racing, likening Constitution Hill's setback to human illnesses that can unexpectedly affect performance. Despite the setback, he remains hopeful that the issue could be resolved within a week, but the decision to compete at Cheltenham hinges on the severity of the condition.

The disappointment was evident during the workout, as Constitution Hill struggled to keep pace with Sir Gino, the Triumph Hurdle favourite. Jockey Nico de Boinville sensed the horse's discomfort and eased off, attributing the difficulty to the presence of mucus affecting Constitution Hill's performance.

The news of Constitution Hill's health setback prompted bookmakers like Coral to suspend betting on the Champion Hurdle, given his status as a key contender and favourite for the race. David Stevens, a Coral spokesperson, acknowledged the market's reaction to the reports and the potential impact on the betting odds, leading to the decision to temporarily halt wagering on the prestigious event.
