Connections explore international opportunities for Bellum Justum

Following his impressive victory in America last weekend under Frankie Dettori, Bellum Justum will have further international opportunities explored.

The Sea The Stars colt, trained by Andrew Balding, made a strong start to his three-year-old season with a win in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom. He then finished seventh in the Derby, followed by notable performances in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot and the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.

Capitalising on these efforts, Bellum Justum travelled to the U.S. as a leading contender for the Nashville Derby and delivered a commanding performance at Kentucky Downs, earning over £800,000 in prize money for owners King Power Racing.

King Power’s racing manager, Alastair Donald, commented: "We believed Bellum Justum was superior to the American horses, but without a direct comparison, it’s always uncertain, and travelling can sometimes lead to complications. Fortunately, everything went smoothly aside from a slow start, and Frankie Dettori’s reliability in big races proved invaluable. He secured a good position, and we were confident he could outstay the competition. It’s gratifying that our strategy worked out for such a substantial reward. There are only two European races worth more—the Arc and the Derby—so we’re pleased with the outcome. I anticipate more horses travelling internationally next year."

Looking ahead, Donald noted: "Bellum Justum has had a busy season with his Derby campaign, so we’ll likely give him a break. We may consider options in the Middle East for January or February. Unfortunately, he wasn’t at his best in the Derby, as he didn’t perform up to expectations, but he’s a tough and admirable horse. We believe he’ll be even better at four, and there should be more exciting opportunities and significant prizes ahead for him. Given his preference for fast ground and his ability to run well over both a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half, travelling will continue to offer him plenty of options."
