It has been an unforgettable summer for Chenelle Ellis, who has accompanied her “best friend” Asfoora on her European journey. Ellis, a groom with Henry Dwyer’s team, has been a constant presence since Asfoora arrived in the UK, witnessing her Royal Ascot victory in the King Charles III Stakes and her narrow defeat at Goodwood in the King George Qatar Stakes.
Ellis, escaping the Australian winter, has relished every moment. “It’s been amazing to see her perform so well,” Ellis said. “When Henry asked me to come over, it was a no-brainer. I'd much rather be here than back in Ballarat's cold.”
Ellis has enjoyed spending long hours with Asfoora, who she describes as her best friend. She feels incredibly fortunate to be part of such an exciting journey. “Growing up with ponies and now being with a horse like her is unreal. I’m grateful to Henry and the owner for this opportunity.”
With a potential rematch against Big Evs at York’s Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes, and possibilities of further international travel, Ellis remains hopeful for more successes. “I’m looking forward to York. Wherever she goes after that—whether it's Ireland, France, or the US—it will be amazing. It’s been the trip of a lifetime.”
Since arriving in the UK, Asfoora and Ellis have made themselves at home at Amy Murphy’s Southgate Stables in Newmarket. Ellis has been supported by Murphy and her husband, former jockey Lemos De Sousa, along with occasional help from Oisin Murphy.
Reflecting on Asfoora’s Royal Ascot win, Ellis cherishes the memory. “The experience was unreal. Winning and meeting royalty made the day unforgettable. Her performance was dominant, and the whole experience was incredible.”
