Confidence is high in the Twiston-Davies camp as Broadway Boy prepares to tackle the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday. The promising six-year-old completed his final piece of serious work on Tuesday, leaving his team optimistic about a standout performance.
A talented novice last season, Broadway Boy secured a notable handicap victory at Cheltenham’s December meeting. This term, he made a solid seasonal return with a third-place finish behind Senior Chief at Cheltenham, a rival he faces again but with a more favourable weight difference.
Assistant trainer Willy Twiston-Davies shared his enthusiasm:
“He came through his final work with flying colours. This race looks tailor-made for him as a second-season novice. His jumping last time was the best we’ve seen, and he’ll relish softer ground.”
Reflecting on his recent outing, he added:
“We were surprised by how much he needed to run last time; he’ll take a massive step forward now. This has been his target since the summer.”
Meanwhile, last year’s Coral Gold Cup-winning team, including trainer Jamie Snowden, jockey Gavin Sheehan, and the GD Partnership, aim for back-to-back victories with Colonel Harry.
Sheehan noted: “It would be very special to win again for the same connections. Colonel Harry is stepping up in trip, just like Datsalrightgino last year, and he felt fantastic when I schooled him recently. Hopefully, the step-up in distance will suit him, even if the ground isn’t ideal.”
Both Broadway Boy and Colonel Harry head into the contest with high expectations, setting the stage for an exciting showdown at Newbury.
