Connections of Brighterdaysahead are bracing for a formidable challenge as the Gordon Elliott-trained mare prepares to face Willie Mullins’ State Man in the December Hurdle at Leopardstown later this month.
State Man, the reigning Champion Hurdler, dominated the hurdling scene last season with victories in the Morgiana Hurdle, December Hurdle, Irish Champion Hurdle, and Punchestown Champion Hurdle, in addition to his Cheltenham Festival triumph. However, he suffered a rare defeat in last month’s Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown, where he was beaten by the race-fit Brighterdaysahead.
Eddie O’Leary of Gigginstown House Stud, which owns Brighterdaysahead, acknowledges the challenge of maintaining that upper hand.
“Hopefully she’ll go to Leopardstown, and we’ll see what happens there,” said O’Leary. “She’ll meet a much better State Man, so we’ll see.”
Eyes on the Future
Despite the Morgiana upset, Elliott has been clear about Brighterdaysahead’s long-term plans, favouring the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham over a shot at the Champion Hurdle. Even if she were to beat State Man again at Leopardstown, O’Leary suggests her path is already decided.
“We’re going to the Mares’ Hurdle and will go chasing next year, not hurdling,” O’Leary added. “We’ll go to Leopardstown at Christmas because there’s nowhere else to go. We’d much rather be going two and a half miles, but there is no other option.”
State Man Aims for Redemption
Mullins and his team will be keen to showcase the real State Man at Leopardstown after his unexpected loss. With fitness concerns no longer a factor, he remains the one to beat in what promises to be a thrilling rematch.
The December Hurdle will undoubtedly provide a significant test for both horses and could set the stage for further intrigue as the season unfolds.
