Auguste Rodin Honoured After Final Run in Japan Cup

Auguste Rodin received a hero’s farewell at Tokyo Racecourse after concluding his illustrious career with an eighth-place finish in the Japan Cup.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt, a son of Japanese legend Deep Impact, aimed to emulate his sire by winning the prestigious race. Despite falling short, Auguste Rodin retires as one of the sport's brightest stars, with a career tally of eight wins from 16 starts, including six Group One victories and nearly £5 million in prize money.

Highlights of his career include dual Derby triumphs at Epsom and the Curragh, a memorable Breeders’ Cup Turf win at Santa Anita in 2023, and a dazzling performance in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer. His exceptional talent first emerged as a juvenile with victory in the Futurity Trophy, and he later cemented his reputation with a commanding display in the Irish Champion Stakes.

Over 15,000 fans stayed after racing to witness Auguste Rodin’s retirement ceremony. Ryan Moore, who partnered with the colt for all but one of his career runs, reflected on their journey:

“He was special from the very first time I rode him. I told Aidan then, ‘I think he’ll win the Derby.’ He was a beautiful mover, just like his sire, and gave me an unbelievable feel in the Derby. He ranks among the very best horses I’ve had the privilege to ride.”

O’Brien expressed gratitude for the opportunity to train such a remarkable son of Deep Impact:

“Having Auguste Rodin has been an incredible journey. He showed his class from day one and brought two continents together, being by Deep Impact out of a Galileo mare. It was always our dream for his final run to be here in Japan, and he retires safe and sound—a privilege to us all.”

Auguste Rodin now joins the ranks of racing legends, leaving a legacy that spans continents and exemplifies the brilliance of his lineage.
