Anglers Crag Excels in Form, Participation in Eider Race Still Pending

Ante-post favourite on a winning streak since shifting to Brian Ellison's yard.

Brian Ellison is contemplating Anglers Crag's entry in the upcoming Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle this Saturday, with the final decision pending.

The nine-year-old gelding has been invincible in three outings under Ellison's care post his move from David Pipe last autumn. Noteworthy is his recent triumph at Musselburgh, marking a hat-trick for the new team. Despite an 11lb hike in the ratings, Anglers Crag is a firm 11-4 favourite to maintain his success streak at the Gosforth Park event. The call on his participation rests with owner Derrick Mossop.

Ellison stated,

"While he's the favourite, we won't confirm his entry until Thursday after discussing it with the owner. The horse is in excellent shape, and if he competes, he'll be primed for it. I'm pleased with his progress. The handicapper didn't hold back after his last win, but I believe he's improved significantly since he joined us".

Regarding the distance and ground conditions, Ellison added,

"The decision to run will consider the ground conditions as he hasn't raced over four miles before. Although he's excelled over three miles at Carlisle and Musselburgh, showcasing both speed and stamina. If he manages four miles, he'll be a strong contender".

Ellison, who clinched the Eider title with Sam's Adventure in 2021, expressed his desire to secure the prize once more with Anglers Crag in fine fettle. The gelding is in exceptional form and will be set to compete if the owner gives the green light.

Anglers Crag is among the 16 runners vying for the £80,000 prize. Git Maker, trained by Jamie Snowden, is anticipated to pose a challenge to Ellison's contender. The lineup also includes last year's runner-up The Galloping Bear, alongside Fenland Tiger seeking a hat-trick and Tommie Beau, who triumphed twice before settling for second in the Sussex National, trained by Seamus Mullins.
