Varian highlights Kingston Hill's contribution to his career

Roger Varian, now a leading trainer in Newmarket, marked a milestone in his career with Kingston Hill's St Leger victory a decade ago. Although Varian was already a Group One winner, the triumph with Kingston Hill, a son of Mastercraftsman, was his first Classic win, cementing his status among racing's elite.

Kingston Hill, who had previously finished second in the Derby and fourth in the Eclipse, was the favourite for St Leger despite a lengthy break. Varian felt a mix of excitement and nervousness, knowing that winning a Classic would solidify his reputation. His confidence paid off as Kingston Hill led the race and held off Purosangue to win by a neck.

Varian reflected on the significance of the win, noting how it helped shape his profile and attract new owners. The victory was also a special moment for owner Paul Smith, who had supported Varian since he took over from Michael Jarvis.

Kingston Hill’s St Leger win was a highlight of a season that included other strong performances, although Varian sometimes wonders what could have been if Kingston Hill had raced on softer ground. Despite this, the colt's achievements, including a fourth-place finish in the Arc, remain memorable.

Varian later added to his St Leger success with Eldar Eldarov in 2022. Unlike Kingston Hill, Eldar Eldarov was a late bloomer but showed potential early on. After winning the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, he was well-prepared for the St Leger and delivered another special victory for Varian.
